You’ve got a brand new Hive Thermostat, but it won’t turn on. What can you do? Here are some things to check before making an appointment with your local repair technician.
What you need to do is simply follow the steps mentioned below. You will be able to get the problem solved by the end of the article.
Change your batteries
Many times, a fix as simple as new batteries can get your thermostat working again. When was the last time you changed your thermostat’s batteries? If it’s been more than a year, there’s a good chance that dead or dying batteries are to blame for your heating system acting up.
In most cases, changing out all of these with fresh sets will solve any issues.
However, it may be necessary to replace other components in addition to getting new batteries if your heating system still doesn’t work properly after you change them out.
Charge your batteries
If your thermostat is not turning on, it could be that your batteries are flat. In that case, fix a new set of AAA batteries and your thermostat should start working again.
If that doesn’t work, try doing a reset: push down the small pinhole button on top of your Hive Body to hold it in for 10 seconds.
It may take some time for your device to come back online after you do that though. Finally, make sure you have WiFi enabled – it’s likely nothing more than a network problem; your router may not be working properly or something else might be interfering with it in some way.
So, turn off all other devices on your network (except smartphones) and see if they start working again then.
Move it closer to a phone or tablet
If you’re having problems with your Hive thermostat not turning on and you’ve tried powering it down and up again, try moving it closer to a phone or tablet.
If both devices are on the same network, many devices will help reconnect them automatically. In case you haven’t connected over Wifi already, a restart of both can sometimes fix these types of issues.
Start by unpairing either device from your thermostat if they’re already paired.
Restart your device
If your thermostat is not turning on, restarting it might solve your problem. Restarting your thermostat will clear out any memory that may be clogging up its performance and causing it to misbehave.
Simply remove power from your device (turn off the circuit breaker or unplug) for 30 seconds then plug it back in.
If all goes well, you’ll see an image of a nice flame on your screen indicating that everything is working as normal again.
If you don’t see anything after plugging it back in, try resetting your thermostat.
Update the software
I haven’t had any issues with my heat not turning on. However, I have noticed that if I forget to update my software for a couple of weeks it will turn off after about half an hour of it being turned on.
So just keep updating! This can be done from your smartphone. Make sure you have put in a passcode and found your wifi network so you can connect to it.
The last step is downloading and installing any updates, which only takes a minute or two at most.
If you are having trouble connecting to your thermostat, follow these steps:
- Turn off your internet connection
- Unplug and replug your modem
- Wait 10 seconds
- Plug back in
- Wait another 10 seconds
- Turn on your internet connection
- Check the Hive app again If that doesn’t work try resetting everything by holding down both buttons until the red light starts flashing (you’ll know when it’s going because there will be three different tones).
- Then hold down both buttons again until the green light starts flashing. Now try connecting again. If all else fails, call Hive Support!
Check your Wifi Connection
The first thing you should do when you discover your thermostat isn’t turning on is to check your internet connection. The fix hive app needs to be connected to your wifi in order to function properly.
You can check and make sure it’s connected by going into your WiFi settings on your device, scrolling down until you see FixHive, then clicking on connect.
If FixHive doesn’t appear here, click Add network manually and follow the prompts on the screen.
Your phone or tablet will have a spot for usernames and passwords (the password is FIXHIVE). Fill these out as directed and tap connect.

Conclusion
It is not a big deal to fix your Hive thermostat if it does not turn on, as long as you are ready for all possible troubles. The main cause of your thermostat failing to operate is the power supply problem.
So just check that before anything else and everything should be fine. Remember that your thermostat’s battery is only an emergency power source,
So try to avoid using it as much as possible – but sometimes, like in my case, there’s simply no way around it. I hope that one of these fixes worked for you! Thank you for reading!
