I have an Ergotron Standing Desk, which I love. Unfortunately, it has one annoying flaw: the thing frequently gets stuck in the up position and I have to struggle to get it back down into place so I can sit at my desk again (so annoying!).
Standing desk provides you with a comfortable material so that you can easily work on it while sitting and standing.
Here’s how I fixed it! Everything is mentioned below in the article. Go through it thoroughly for a comprehensive guide.
Remove The Parts
Most of these adjustments can be made without having to take anything apart, but it is possible that you will need to remove certain pieces from your unit. To do so, use a Philips head screwdriver to unscrew any screws that are holding your desk together and then remove all of its parts.
If you’re still having trouble getting your standing desk to work after disassembling it, see below for more information on how to fix common problems.
Remember, if you break something or manage to get stuck in one way or another, make sure you let us know and we’ll help you out with some friendly customer service! In most cases, we can ship replacement parts directly within 24 hours.
Cleaning the Gears
Remove any debris that is causing your standing desk to not move. Make sure that nothing is caught in between either of the gears, because if it is, then you will have difficulty fixing it. If there are items stuck, try using a soft brush to clean them out.
You can also spray a small amount of WD-40 onto one side of each gear and work it in a little bit with your fingers until everything moves freely again.
However, be careful because WD-40 may damage your finish if you spray too much on too quickly and let it sit for a while before wiping away any excess. Once everything moves freely again, screw everything back together with new screws and tighten them fully until they’re snug.
Remove/Clean The Motor
If you have a standing desk that is not able to lock into position (stuck in an up position), then you will need to remove it from your standing desk.
When removing, be careful with power cords. After that wrap them so they don’t get stuck on anything. Next, clean out any dust and debris from inside of the motor cover using a Q-tip or soft toothbrush.
Then reattach the motor cover to your standing desk if applicable and try locking/unlocking your desktop again. If the problem still persists, proceed to further steps.
Replace Broken Screw
When your Ergotron desk gets stuck in its up position, it’s often because one of its screws has come loose. To fix that problem, take out all of your hardware. If you don’t know how to do that, ask a friend with basic tool skills to help you.
Then put together a small toolkit. You’ll need a Phillips head screwdriver for size #0 and #1 screws, along with a flathead screwdriver for #2s and a hammer.
Remove your broken screw using the appropriately sized screwdriver and then install an identical replacement.
Replace Damaged Part
If you’re lucky, one of these troubleshooting tips will solve your problem. First, try using a paperclip or sewing needle to move it and see if that works. If not, you might need to get in there with some needle-nose pliers and just move it manually.
Finally, if nothing has worked yet, call customer service for further guidance. Be sure to have your product’s model number on hand. It will help them to assist you directly with whatever issue you may be experiencing. And hopefully, we don’t see too many issues about broken monitors on here!
Reassemble The Stand And Test
You’ll want to reassemble your stand after following these steps. Be sure to take your time and make sure everything is in place and secured properly.
Once you have it all back together, put a little pressure on your work surface. After that check to see if it pushes down smoothly when you lean into it with your weight. This can give you a good idea of whether or not you’ve fixed your problem.
Conclusion
I am very happy with my new standing desk. I like that it is small, affordable, and looks nice in my home office. It was very easy to put together and took less than 5 minutes. The only issue that I had was that for some reason when trying to lower it, I couldn’t get it past a certain point.
But after reading other customer reviews on Amazon and seeing some of them mentioning their issues too I found out that there might be an adjustment needed on one of its wheels so that you can make sure your desk doesn’t tip over when lowering it all of a sudden.
