My Breville Espresso Machine has always been one of my most prized possessions, and I use it every day to make myself the perfect cup of coffee.
So when it suddenly stopped working out of nowhere last week, I was shocked and devastated.
But as I tried to figure out why it had stopped working, and how I could fix it. I learned quite a bit about espresso machines in general.
This prompted me to write this blog post about my Breville not working in hopes that my experience might help other owners of Breville espresso machines who might be struggling with similar issues.

ToggleSome ways to tell If your Espresso Machine Is Broken
If your espresso machine isn’t producing a great cup of coffee, there are a few things you can do to try and remedy the situation.
We’ve outlined these steps below, as well as five reasons that may indicate your machine needs attention.Â
Of course, if none of these seem to work for you, we recommend giving your local repairman or shop a call.
But if it’s just an issue with maintenance or set-up (or if you don’t know where to begin), then keep reading, you might be able to fix it yourself.
Several different symptoms could indicate a problem with your espresso machine: water not flowing through;Â
no steam; strange noises coming from inside; clogged up water filter; etc.Â
One symptom of a broken espresso machine is simply no water flowing through at all. This could mean one of two things, either your pump has died on you or something else got clogged up inside.
DIY Solutions For Fixing Your Broken Espresso Machine
So your fancy espresso machine isn’t working like it used to? Instead of shipping it back and waiting weeks for a repair, try one of these DIY solutions.Â
They’re easy to do, cost-effective, and should get you up and running in no time. Here’s what I did:Â
 Rebuild my GrinderÂ
I rebuilt my grinder by taking it apart, cleaning out all coffee residue from both burrs (the spinning disks that grind coffee), and making sure they were both seated properly on their shafts.Â
Add WaterÂ
My water tank was empty so I filled it with water and ran two full cycles without any coffee beans or grounds to make sure there weren’t any leaks.Â
Replace The Heating Element
After everything else checked out, I replaced my heating element using a guide here. It worked perfectly after that.
The Basic Requirements For Using An Espresso Machine
When it comes to home espresso machines, you generally have two basic requirements.
First, you need an espresso machine that has a steam wand; otherwise, you can’t make coffee-based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos.
(For more on why coffee beverages taste so good in coffee shops, see How Is Cappuccino Made?.) Second, you should choose a machine with at least a 15-bar pump.
This will ensure that your shots of espresso are powerful enough for even those who like their coffee strong.
If you want to experiment with other types of brews, look for a machine with a built-in grinder as well—it will allow you to grind your beans for use in your favourite brew method.
The Best Features Of An Easy To Use Coffee Maker
One of my best friends once gave me a coffee maker for Christmas. It was one of his favourite gifts because he knew I loved coffee, but that I also didn’t have a lot of time to be making it in the morning. You see, I wake up early (like 3 am) and on weekdays.
I often head out to meetings at 5:30 or 6 am, so anything that can save me time before work makes life much easier.
The problem with my friend’s gift, however, was that it wasn’t very easy to use.
I had never even seen an espresso machine like it before and when I tried using it for the first time, several buttons confused me.
