I Need To Know Why
When my coffee maker’s hot plate shuts off, I can’t keep it on for more than five minutes. When that happens, I need an immediate solution.
For all of you who are new to using your Cuisinart Coffee Maker, here are some tips and instructions that will assist you with getting started:
- First and foremost make sure you have unplugged your machine from its power source before doing anything else.
- It may sound silly but it is extremely important not to plug in your machine until instructed by one of our helpful videos.
Why Is This Happening?
Sometimes hot plates shut off as a solution to a problem. When I noticed my coffee maker was shutting off, I did some research and found that, in most cases, there is an issue with the thermal fuse.
After much discussion on forums of frustrated owners wanting solutions rather than complaints, I found out exactly what to do.
The best part is that it’s really easy to fix. To replace your thermal fuse you will need a small Philips head screwdriver.
What Caused This Issue?
Fortunately, there is a solution. For me, it was important to find out what caused my Cuisinart coffee maker hot plate to shut off.
There are several different causes of why a coffee maker shuts off after 10 minutes or less. Some of these problems may cause your coffee maker to shut down completely.
In my case, none of these causes were related or in conjunction with each other, they are all separate issues that could cause your coffee machine from overheating and shutting down together.
This is good news because if you don’t know what caused your problem then you can rule out those things as possible solutions and continue looking for a solution.
I want to point out that I am not an electrician nor do I play one on TV. If you have any doubts about any of these solutions please contact an electrician before proceeding with any repairs.

What Are My Options Now?
If you own a model manufactured between 2007 and 2013, your automatic shutoff switch may be faulty. If you are still under warranty, you can contact Cuisinart at 800-726-0190 or request an RMA on their website.
However, if you’re not covered by a warranty or are looking for a solution that doesn’t require waiting for parts and repair time, there is an easy fix.
The heat sensor and temperature switch are located inside of your maker where it is hard to reach.
How Can I Fix This
Before you throw your Cuisinart in a fit of rage, there is a solution! It’s called a thermal cut-off switch and it can be purchased online or at an appliance parts shop.
These switches are quite common and easy to install. All you need is one screwdriver and about 5 minutes of your time.
- To begin, unplug your coffee maker from its power source.
- Next, locate where your current thermal cut-off switch is located on your machine; most likely it will be on top of the heating element (it looks like a little black box).
- Then remove that switch by unscrewing it with a Phillips head screwdriver. Once removed, look inside for two wires attached with electrical tape; these wires lead directly into where you previously removed your old thermal cut-off switch.
When Will It Get Fixed?
When a Cuisinart coffee maker hot plate shuts off unexpectedly, it can be very frustrating. I got annoyed with my coffeemaker one morning and took it apart in frustration.
As it turns out, there’s a simple solution that fixes most problems you might experience with your unit.
My solution involves cleaning up some of those parts and making sure they are properly lubricated so they work as designed.
- First, turn off your machine and unplug it from its power source.
- Once you do that, remove all water from the inside of your coffee maker by opening its spigot or turning on its drip tray (if applicable).
- Then, open up your machine by removing any screws or other fasteners holding it together.
Some models have different designs—like levers—that hold them together; just use whatever tools you need to get inside safely without damaging anything.

Conclusion
The hot plate turns off when we make too many cups of coffee. Sometimes it is 6-8 cups, sometimes it’s 9-12, and so on.
I have never tried making more than 12 cups. I don’t need more than 12 cups of coffee in a day.
